At the Jane Austen Center, they had a similar book that approached Mr. Darcy's side of the story (as if Austen hadn't done that already). I think is derives from an inherent desire to hang on to characters we love, and a sense of ownership of the story that justifies our right to do so. I think as a society we need to learn to accept closure. Not that i'm a model example for this...
I can sympathize with the desire to hang onto well-loved characters; in fact, when I was a kid I fantasized writing a whole series of books about the Little House characters. But now that I'm (hopefully) older and wiser, I also think there's something to be said for respecting the author's choice of where to begin and end his or her story. If L.M. Montgomery didn't think Anne's backstory was important enough to warrant its own book, then I think we should have to accept that. Not to mention the whole idea of intellectual property (I don't think that's too much of a stretch) and not stealing someone else's characters...
